As Toyota recalled more than 125,000 Tacoma trucks in three markets this week because they lacked proper crash protection, the company was rolling out a new Prius.

About 8,000 Prius models with a defective rear crash-sensing system were recalled on Tuesday, but the automaker added new ones to its lineup in time for the car’s fifth anniversary this month.

Toyota spokesman Mike Michels said Wednesday that the company always tries to “manufacture capacity to meet demand” but that “it did fall short.”

A formal product recall of the Prius will likely come in the “next few weeks,” he said. The company’s No. 1 engine builder in the U.S., Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas Inc., or TMMT, in Georgetown, is adding a new assembly line in July that will improve output of the car.

This new Prius is already on display at Toyota’s Georgetown Toyota dealership. The recall means the model will be gone for six months, said Prius spokesman Steve Belskus.

“We will continue to keep our focus on delivering a safe and reliable vehicle, and our team will make every effort to return to the road as soon as possible,” he said.

The recall covers about 126,000 model year 2013-2014 Prius vehicles in California, 130,000 in Texas and 120,000 in Washington.

When Toyota first introduced the car in 2007, it was touted as the first hybrid vehicle for mass-market vehicles.
